Sweet Savory Mini Grilled Cheese (Printable)

Crispy golden mini rolls filled with melted cheddar and honey mustard glaze

# What You Need:

→ Bread & Dairy

01 - 12 mini Hawaiian sweet rolls, split horizontally
02 - 6 slices cheddar cheese, cut in half
03 - 3 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened

→ Meats (optional)

04 - 6 slices deli ham, cut in half

→ Condiments

05 - 2 tablespoons honey mustard
06 - 1 tablespoon mayonnaise

→ Optional Toppings

07 - 1 tablespoon poppy seeds
08 - 1 tablespoon finely chopped fresh chives

# How To Make It:

01 - Heat a large nonstick skillet or griddle over medium heat until evenly hot.
02 - Whisk together honey mustard and mayonnaise in a small bowl until fully combined.
03 - Open each Hawaiian roll and spread a thin layer of the honey mustard mixture on the cut sides. Place a half slice of cheddar cheese on the bottom half, top with ham if using, and cover with the roll top.
04 - Spread softened butter evenly over the outside tops and bottoms of each assembled sandwich.
05 - Place mini sandwiches butter-side down in the preheated skillet. Press gently with a spatula and grill for 2–3 minutes per side until golden brown and cheese is melted.
06 - Remove from heat and immediately sprinkle with poppy seeds and chives if desired. Serve warm.

# Expert Tips:

01 -
  • The Hawaiian rolls turn impossibly crispy on the outside while staying soft inside
  • That honey mustard cuts through the richness in just the right way
02 -
  • Don't skip buttering the outsides. The flavor and texture difference is worth it
  • Work in batches if your pan is small rather than crowding them together
03 -
  • Use a very light hand with the honey mustard. Too much overwhelms the delicate sweetness
  • Press gently with the spatula. Smashing too hard makes the rolls tough
